Goodbye Charles Lane

He seemed to pop up in just about every movie I’ve ever watched…certainly in my most favorites: It’s A Wonderful Life as the rent collector, Mad Mad Mad Mad World, Arsenic and Old Lace as the reporter. Charles Lane died at the the age of 102. What a life span. One of those faces any devotee of the movies would instantly recognize, but never know his real name. His characters always irascible and tough, even with the skinny frame and steely gaze through rimless spectacles, you didn’t want to push him too far. I seem to remember him doing a short stint as Mr. Wilson on the old Dennis the Menace TV show. Even if he didn’t, he should have. IT was the perfect character for him. He wasn’t a movie star, he was an actor. And a good one.
