And Another Thing…. UPDATE

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away men’s initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.
–Abraham Lincoln

UPDATE: William J. H. Boetcker created this list of Ten Cannots that is mistakenly attributed to Lincoln  (Thanx Stace).  Doesn’t diminish their truthfulness but it’s good to get these things correct.  And I’m usually the one shouting my mouth off about correct sources…sheesh…

  1. Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and all he may do is sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

That is a big part of the problem – some will not do what is needed to improve their own situation.

Bill – LOL. I agree. That still doesn’t mean we should jump to their aid. It’s their choice not to do anything…they have to live with the consequences.

  3. Cooper – Right! Tough love – make them bail their own puke out of the boat.

The man was a genius. Too often we overlook the simplist of truths. Perhaps we are so conditioned to look for the complications, for the reasons… for the excuses. Our society as a whole is rife with those who feel they are entitled, whether it be for welfare, a guaranteed job, tax breaks… the list goes on. Here’s a new approach: Educate yourself. Learn a new skill. Work. Push yourself. Change tactics. TRY. Reward will eventually come. Penalizing those who create growth and change hurts all of us.

Okay, I’m stepping off the soapbox now. But I still think Ayn Rand should be required reading.

  5. yeah if we ever were smart enough to elect a leader that smart we’d probably be dumb enough to shoot him…oh wait, we were.

FG – you mean (gasp) personal responsibility ?? Blasphemer!!!!

lime – sigh. yeah. I know. what I don’t understand is how we got away with Bush for 8 years with Cheney in office???

  7. I can only guess because Bush never agreed to go dove hunting with him…

Some have said the reason Bush 41 chose Dan Quayle for his VP was to give a potential assassin reason to think twice.

    Bill

  8. They just don’t make em like good ole Abe anymore… but we need them now, more than ever.

  9. Stace

William J. H. Boetcker actually is the person who said this.
